PHILIPPINES SUPPORTS ACCESSION OF CHILE, EGYPT, AND MOROCCO TO THE TAC

07 September 2016 – The Philippines and the rest of the ASEAN Member States (AMS) witnessed the signing of the Instruments of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) by Chile, Egypt, and Morocco in a ceremony held at the sidelines of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summit on 06 September 2016 in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Immediately before the ceremony, the AMS signed the Instruments of Extension of the TAC to the three (3) new High Contracting Parties (HCPs).

The TAC was signed at the 1st ASEAN Summit in 1976. Its purpose is to promote peace, amity and cooperation among the HCPs. The Philippines is among the original five (5) states that acceded to the Treaty.

In July 2016, ASEAN Foreign Ministers adopted the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Statement on the Occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the TAC at the sidelines of the 49th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Vientiane. In the Statement, they reaffirmed their commitment to the objectives of the TAC. The Philippines views the commemoration of the Treaty’s establishment as a fitting recognition of its achievements especially in preserving peace and stability in the region. END
