13 May 2022 – As part of its initiative to increase the awareness of ASEAN in Morocco and upon the initiative of the Philippine Embassy in Morocco, the ASEAN Committee in Rabat (ACR) visited the Tanger Med Complex in Tangier.
Port Commander Khalid Samir presents the features of the Tanger Med Complex to ASEAN Ambassadors.
Tanger Med Complex is a global logistics gateway located on the Strait of Gibraltar, a second crossing point of world trade on global scale, and it is at the crossroads of major maritime routes with more than 100,000 ships transiting the port annually. As the first transshipment port in the Mediterranean and the leading container port in Africa for three consecutive years (2018-2020), Tanger Med is a symbol of Morocco’s dynamic development.

During the visit, the Ambassadors and other ASEAN diplomats toured the facilities of container terminals 1 and 2 and were briefedabout Tanger Med’s operations, including the complex’s impressive processing capacity of 9 million containers, 1 million vehicles, 15 million tons of hydrocarbon, 7 million passengers, and 700,000 truck. Tanger Med representatives also highlighted the reopening of the passenger line between the port of Tangier and the Spanish ports of Algeciras and Tarifa. Tanger Med hopes to gradually increase the passenger traffic to make up for the loss of activities in the last two and a half years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ACR hopes that the familiarization visit would serve as an opportunity to encourage Tanger Med to expand its linkage with ports in the Southeast Asia region. END
