Within three weeks after arriving in Morocco, Ambassador Leslie J. Baja presented his credentials to Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as non-resident ambassador to that country. In his conversation with the President, Ambassador Baja noted that the presence of Filipinos in Mauritania serves as a link between the two countries. In line with the thrust of the Department of Foreign Affairs to increase the Philippine footprint in Africa, Baja proposed the establishment of an honorary consulate in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott to strengthen the Philippine presence in Mauritania.

President El Ghazouani welcomed the accreditation of Ambassador Baja and said that the Filipinos ought to look at Mauritania as a possible place for overseas employment. He also noted the strengths of the Philippines in skills training and hoped that there will be cooperation in the agriculture and fisheries fields.

Ambassador Baja also took the opportunity to meet with the members of the Filipino community in Nouakchott and assured them that the Embassy based in Rabat, Morocco is looking after their welfare. END
